Hat care & sizing

Caring for your hat.

A good hat lasts for years with a little attention.

How to care for your hat

  • Avoid manhandling the brim and crown. When taking your hat on and off, hold it by the top of the hat.
  • Don’t leave your hat lying around. Hang it on something so it’s supported from the inside, or if you have to lay it down, flip it over onto the crown. Never place it flat on its brim.
  • Store your hat in a cool, dry place. Excess heat and moisture will wear your hat out fast and can cause it to shrink.
  • Your hat is meant to be worn! If it gets wet, let nature do the drying: lay it down on the crown, hang it, or keep wearing it and let it air dry.
  • Give it a gentle brushing every blue moon. Brush along the outside in a counter-clockwise motion to maintain the grain of the fur.
  • Grit and grease build character and give your hat some extra personality, but if it needs a little clean, try fine sandpaper for small stains and a lint roller or a horsehair hat brush to dust it off.

Finding your size

To measure your head accurately you will need a measuring tape, and ideally someone to help. First decide how you would like to wear your hat, then follow that option: there are significant differences between them.

Option 1: Traditional

  1. Place the measuring tape around your head over your occipital bone (the furthest part of the back of your head).
  2. Bring the tape around to the front, about 1 inch above your ears, and position it in the center of your forehead or just above the eyebrows, depending on where you want your hat to sit. Make sure the tape sits comfortably: this is how the hat will sit on your head.
  3. Check the measurement. If you are between sizes, size up and add a hat filler to your order to tailor the fit.

Option 2: Halo style

  1. Place the measuring tape around your head over your occipital bone (the furthest part of the back of your head).
  2. Bring the tape around to the front, about 1 inch above your ears, and position it at the top of your forehead, where your hairline begins. Make sure the tape sits comfortably: this is how the hat will sit on your head.
  3. Check the measurement. If you are between sizes, size up and add a hat filler to your order to tailor the fit.
